The H2O Era & Early Acting Ambitions

Growing up in Queensland, Claire Holt was far more likely to pursue sports or academics than acting. Graduating from Stuartholme School in Toowong in 2005, she originally intended to pursue a medical degree. She was fiercely athletic, competing in water polo, swimming, and volleyball — a physical baseline that surprisingly proved to be the exact prerequisite for her breakout role. She had only appeared in a few minor commercial campaigns when, in 2006, she auditioned for a new Australian children's television series requiring extensive, highly physical underwater work.

That series was H2O: Just Add Water. As Emma Gilbert, one of three teenagers who miraculously transform into mermaids upon contact with water, Claire achieved near-instantaneous global recognition among the tween and teenage demographic. The show became an unexpected international juggernaut, syndicated across more than 120 countries and establishing her early reputation as a bankable, reliable lead actress. She departed the series after season two specifically to begin the aggressive transition into the North American film and television market.

Entering the American Market: Mean Girls 2 & Pretty Little Liars

The transition from Australian television star to established Hollywood player is notoriously difficult; many fail the jump. Claire's strategy was methodical. Instead of holding out exclusively for lead roles, she strategically accepted highly visible supporting parts that would introduce her to American casting directors. This resulted in her casting as Chastity Meyer in the MTV sequel Mean Girls 2 (2011), followed closely by a critical recurring arc in the ultra-popular ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars as Samara Cook. She was establishing momentum precisely when the The CW network was casting for their most important new characters.
